How to Choose a Neurofeedback Clinician

NeuroSolution Center

One of the most important steps in getting help for you or your loved ones is finding a clinician whom you can trust that is knowledgeable, experienced, and current with the rapidly changing neurofeedback standards.

The body of neurofeedback research is growing rapidly, providing a wealth of new insights into the brain and mechanisms for influencing neurological change. As neurofeedback advances and becomes more widely practiced, choosing the best clinician for your needs becomes more complex.

There are a number of important considerations in making your choice.

Board Certifications

Board certification demonstrates knowledge, professionalism and adherence to carefully developed standards as a health care provider.

To become a BCIA Board-certified practitioner, one must:

  • hold an appropriate degree in a BCIA-approved clinical health care field
  • meet strict didactic education and clinical training requirements
  • pass a written certification exam
  • adhere to an ethical code of conduct.

As well, board-certified practitioners typically maintain advanced knowledge and skill levels in keeping with the advances in the field

Our clients value our BCIA board certifications that Becky obtained in 2008 and Kelsey obtained in 2019. Our clients take comfort in the fact that we have met higher standards of competence and continue to grow and expand as the field changes, helping us provide better care to them.

Quantitative Electroencephalogram (QEEG)

Just as an X-Ray or MRI provides critical insight to a physician, the most important diagnostic tool of an effective neurofeedback clinician is the quantitative electro-encephalogram or QEEG. Each of our clients begin with a QEEG that allows us to clearly view what is going on in the brain and tailor neurofeedback protocols for their specific needs and deliver real results—without costly or time-consuming guessing or experimentation.

Types of Neurofeedback Offered

Traditional amplitude training is the staple of neurofeedback training. It is used to increase or decrease certain types of brain waves such as slow wave (day-dreaming) or high beta (fight or flight) within a region of the brain. Coherence training is a newer form of neurofeedback training that improves or inhibits the communication pathways between regions of the brain.

For years we used amplitude training exclusively and although we saw very good results, it wasn’t until we discovered coherence training that we began seeing stellar results. In our experience, nearly every QEEG indicates the need for both methods to achieve the best results.

Results

Strong, repeatable results are the hallmark of an evidence-based intervention. We measure results using symptom improvement, test score improvement, and most importantly, through a follow-up QEEG. Using these methods, the results are easily proven and tracked. We have helped many, many people dramatically change their lives in ways that no other intervention has.

Attention & Personality

Sharing personal challenges and struggles is intensely personal and finding someone with whom you can be comfortable, open and honest is very important. This is important to us as well because the more information we have the better we can tailor protocols to your needs. We conduct sessions in a private environment rather than in a group, and always accompanied rather than in isolation.

Location

Location is important, but not as important as results. Ideally you should choose someone within reasonable driving distance as you may be visiting twice/week during the course of treatment. However, effective and rapid results are far more important. Many of our clients travel up to an hour each way to visit us.
